Phase Retardation Analysis in a Rotated Plane-Parallel Plate for Phase-Shifting Digital Holography

    Get PDF
In this paper, we detail a phase-shift implementation in a rotated plane-parallel plate (PPP). Considering the phase-shifting digital holography application, we provide a more precise phase-shift estimation based on PPP thickness, rotation, and mutual inclination of reference and object wavefronts. We show that phase retardation uncertainty implemented by the rotated PPP in a simple configuration is less than the uncertainty of a traditionally used piezoelectric translator. Physical experiments on a phase test target verify the high quality of phase reconstruction.publishedVersionPeer reviewe

Application of Terahertz Pulse Time-Domain Holography for Phase Imaging

    Get PDF
Terahertz pulse time-domain holography (THz PTDH) is the powerful technique for high-resolution amplitude and phase THz imaging that allows mapping spectroscopic information across the imaged object. In this paper, we consider most sought after applications of phase imaging provided by this technique and experimentally demonstrate the ability of the method to reconstruct smooth and stepped relief features of an object that is transparent in THz region. Unlike the amplitude distribution, which does not contain any significant information in this case, phase distribution not only reveals the object qualitatively, but also allows the reconstruction of the object thicknessespattern, even in low signal-to-noise registration conditions. Mainlimitations of the proposed method, such as transverse resolutionand low signal-to-noise environment are carefully studied and mitigated

BACKGROUND: There is increasing interest in the microbiome of the hepatobiliary system. This study investigated the influence of infection with the fish-borne liver fluke, Opisthorchis felineus on the biliary microbiome of residents of the Tomsk region of western Siberia. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Samples of bile were provided by 56 study participants, half of who were infected with O. felineus, and all of who were diagnosed with gallstone disease. The microbiota of the bile was investigated using high throughput, Illumina-based sequencing targeting the prokaryotic 16S rRNA gene. About 2,797, discrete phylotypes of prokaryotes were detected. At the level of phylum, bile from participants with opisthorchiasis showed greater numbers of Synergistetes, Spirochaetes, Planctomycetes, TM7 and Verrucomicrobia. Numbers of \u3e 20 phylotypes differed in bile of the O. felineus-infected compared to non-infected participants, including presence of species of the genera Mycoplana, Cellulosimicrobium, Microlunatus and Phycicoccus, and the Archaeans genus, Halogeometricum, and increased numbers of Selenomonas, Bacteroides, Rothia, Leptotrichia, Lactobacillus, Treponema and Klebsiella. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Overall, infection with the liver fluke O. felineus modified the biliary microbiome, increasing abundance of bacterial and archaeal phylotypes

Single-scan multiplane phase retrieval with a radiation of terahertz quantum cascade laser

Terahertz phase retrieval from a set of axially separated diffractive intensity distributions is a promising single-beam computational imaging technique that ensures the obtention of high spatial resolutions and phase wavefronts, but remains restricted by time-consuming data acquisition processes. In this work, we have adopted an approach, relying on the radiation of a quantum cascade laser and the implementation of an express single-scan measurement of intensity distributions through the continuous on-the-go displacement of a high-sensitivity antenna-coupled microbolometer sensor array. In addition to the simplicity of this practical implementation and the minimization of measurement times, such an approach overcomes the problem of preliminary optimal selections of transverse intensity distributions used in the iterative phase retrieval algorithm and guarantees the required data diversity for high-quality wavefront reconstruction

Investigation of Nonlinear Optical Properties of Quantum Dots Deposited onto a Sample Glass Using Time-Resolved Inline Digital Holography

    Get PDF
We report on the application of time-resolved inline digital holography in the study of the nonlinear optical properties of quantum dots deposited onto sample glass. The Fresnel diffraction patterns of the probe pulse due to noncollinear degenerate phase modulation induced by a femtosecond pump pulse were extracted from the set of inline digital holograms and analyzed. The absolute values of the nonlinear refractive index of both the sample glass substrate and the deposited layer of quantum dots were evaluated using the proposed technique. To characterize the inhomogeneous distribution of the samples’ nonlinear optical properties, we proposed plotting an optical nonlinearity map calculated as a local standard deviation of the diffraction pattern intensities induced by noncollinear degenerate phase modulation.publishedVersionPeer reviewe

    Roadmap on holography

From its inception holography has proven an extremely productive and attractive area of research. While specific technical applications give rise to 'hot topics', and three-dimensional (3D) visualisation comes in and out of fashion, the core principals involved continue to lead to exciting innovations in a wide range of areas. We humbly submit that it is impossible, in any journal document of this type, to fully reflect current and potential activity; however, our valiant contributors have produced a series of documents that go no small way to neatly capture progress across a wide range of core activities. As editors we have attempted to spread our net wide in order to illustrate the breadth of international activity. In relation to this we believe we have been at least partially successful. This work was supported by Ministerio de EconomĂa, Industria y Competitividad (Spain) under projects FIS2017-82919-R (MINECO/AEI/FEDER, UE) and FIS2015-66570-P (MINECO/FEDER), and by Generalitat Valenciana (Spain) under project PROMETEO II/2015/015
